The 1st NIP-RIKEN Joint Research Workshop was held at National Institute of Physics (NIP) University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD), Quezon City, Philippines on 10-11 November. Both scientists at UPD and RIKEN have had close relationships for a long time, and in September 2016 both institutions signed an Agreement to establish the International Joint Graduate School Program, which aims to identify and foster talented young scientists capable of contributing to future research collaboration, not only between UPD and RIKEN, but also between the Philippines and Japan in the field of science and technology, At this symposium, 16 researchers from RIKEN and NIP presented their research works, This 1st workshop’s success promises to strength the future collaborations and exchanges between RIKEN and NIP-UPD.

Dr. Harri Hyvönen, Director of Strategy and Development, City of Jyväskylä in Finland, and Mr. Beng Tong Neo of Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics visited RIKEN Singapore RO and had a discussion with Director Tsuzawa regarding RIKEN’s activities in Singapore as well as Singapore’s digitization.

To mark the 130th Anniversary of Thailand-Japan Diplomatic Relations, Thailand’s National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) and the Embassy of Japan in Thailand organized a joint Thailand-Japan Research Seminar on Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites on 6-7 September 2017. Dr. Hideki Abe from RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science was one of invited speakers of this seminar. RIKEN Singapore RO Director Tsuzawa also attended this meeting as an invited guest.

On August 10, Mr. Kisaburo TOKAI, Member of Japan’s House of Representatives and former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), accompanied by the Embassy of Japan officials, visited RIKEN Office and held a meeting with Singapore office representatives from RIKEN, Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). The representatives from 3 national research agencies made presentations about Singapore’s R&D landscape as well as their activities in Singapore.

On June 24, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology (CDB), Kobe, Japan. Dr. Masayo Takahashi, Project Leader, Laboratory for Retinal Regeneration, whose work led the world first clinical trial to use induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in humans explained developments of her recent research. After the site visits, the Prime Minister had a meeting with RIKEN President Matsumoto, Executive Directors and other CDB representatives. During the discussion, the Prime Minister hoped RIKEN would continue to lead the world in the area of regenerative medicine and drug discovery.

On May 31 and 1 June, the inaugural Science and Technology Organisations (STO) Summit,co-organized by A*STAR in Singapore and VTT in Finland, was held at The St. Regis in Singapore. There were participants from 43 different organizations from around the world to aims to bring together global leaders from different countries to share insights and ideas on global socio-economic technology shifts, new and emerging areas of opportunities, and their thoughts on research strategies and policies.
Dr. Yuji KAMIYA, RIKEN Horary Scientist, and RIKEN Singapore Office Director and Deputy Director were invited and attended this summit followed by his visit to RIKEN Singapore Office.

On April 26, more than 600 guests, including Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, celebrated RIKEN’s centennial at a ceremony held at the Tokyo International Forum in downtown Tokyo, Japan. RIKEN Singapore Office’s Director Tsuzawa and Deputy Director Ohata attended the ceremony. There were invited guests from around of the world, including VIPs of South East Asia’s leading research institutes and universities.

URICAS Symposium 2017 was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM), Penang, Malaysia. USM-RIKEN Centre of Ageing Science (URICAS) was established at USM in February 2015 as a joint laboratory of USM and RIKEN to use the fruits of their collaborations since 1993 to solve the problems facing humanity as well as to strengthen joint research and personnel exchanges. At this symposium, 23 researchers from RIKEN and USM presented their research works, and USM students also participated by briefing and poster presentations of their projects.

The one-north Festival, jointly organised by Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and JTC, is a celebration of research, innovation, creativity, and enterprise. The inaugural festival was open to the public on 5 and 6 August at Fusionopolis One @ one-north, Singapore. The Singapore offices of RIKEN and Japan Science and Technology Agency(JST), as tenants of Biopolis and members of one-north community, set up a joint exhibition booth at the festival and introduced our research activities and programs. 2016 marks 50th Anniversary of Singapore-Japan Diplomatic Relations (SJ50). Our booth exhibition was officially approved as a program in line with SJ50 projects.
