The 5th USM-RIKEN Centre of Ageing Science (URICAS) Workshop held at RIKEN Singapore Office

November 25-26, 2019

The 5th USM-RIKEN Centre of Ageing Science (URICAS) Workshop was held at RIKEN Singapore Office, Biopolis, Singapore on November 25-26, 2019.

USM-RIKEN Centre of Ageing Science (URICAS) was established in February 2015 as a collaborative program by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and RIKEN, Japan, to undertake research on ageing and illnesses associated with the process of ageing as well as to strengthen personnel exchanges by using the fruits of their collaborations since 1993.

At this workshop, 23 researchers from RIKEN and USM presented their collaborative research works and discussed their research findings actively. In addition, 4 external reviewers were invited to join this workshop and assist to compile the final year’s report of URICAS project. The project has got positive review by them.

Students from the University of Tokyo visited RIKEN Office

Eight undergraduate students from The University of Tokyo visited RIKEN Office during their Overseas Experience Program in Singapore. RIKEN Singapore RO Director Tsuzawa talked about Singapore and RIKEN’s R&D activities as well as his overseas work experience.

RIKEN booth at “Thailand National Science and Technology Fair 2019” 

August 16-25, 2019

From August 16 to 25, RIKEN participated in the “Thailand National Science and Technology Fair 2019”, the annual exhibition in Bangkok, the country’s largest science and technology fair of the year. According to the local media, more than 1 million people visited the fair, and most of them were Thai students. This year’s theme was “Science, Technology and Innovation: Inspiring Creativity for Better Living and Sustainability for the Nation”. RIKEN joined the fair as a part of Japan Pavilion for the third time. RIKEN booth featured introduction of RIKEN national science institute and programs for young researchers as well as RIKEN’s Brain Science research collaboration with Chulalongcorn University in Thailand, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. With the help of joint research collaborators from Chulalongcorn University at the booth, we explained and answered many inquiries from Thai visitors about our research activities.

Ms. Hiroko Kuno, Director, Business-Academia Cooperation Office, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries visited RIKEN Singapore Office

On June 25, 2019 Ms. Hiroko Kuno, Director and Dr. Takuya Sato, Researcher, Business-Academia Cooperation Office, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries visited RIKEN Singapore Office.

Ms. Kuno explained the “Industry-Academia-Government Cooperation Council” of the ministry, of which RIKEN’s five research centers are members.  It aims at strong growth of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Food Industries by creating innovation with broad range of knowledge through networking and collaboration among various industries and fields. In return, Singapore Office Director Tsuzawa introduced about Singapore’s latest trend of R&D, especially in the field of agricultural biotechnology. Mr. Suzuki and Ms. Nakamura from RIKEN International Affair Division , who stayed at Singapore office on the day, joined the meeting, too. Both the ministry and RIKEN promised to exchange relevant information in future.

RIKEN Executive Director attended the 6th STS forum ASEAN – JAPAN WORKSHOP in Singapore

The 6th STS forum ASEAN – JAPAN  WORKSHOP in Singapore, organized by Japan’s Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum) and Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) , was held in Singapore on April 23, 2019.

Prof. Motoko Kotani, RIKEN Executive Director in charge of International Corporations, attended as a speaker and one of panelists at this workshop’s “Session 1: Science and Technology Cooperation between ASEAN and Japan: human resource development and brain circulation”. STS forum was founded by Mr. Koji Omi, former Finance Minister of Japan. STS forum ASEAN – JAPAN WORKSHOP has been an annual event since 2014. At this session, the panelists discussed about how to strengthen and deepen ASEAN members and Japan’s cooperation in science and technology, innovation and human resources development.

Students from Seifu Nankai High School visited RIKEN Office

March 15, 2019

A group of students and teachers from Seifu Nankai Senior High School in Osaka, Japan visited RIKEN Office for their Overseas Fieldwork. This is the school’s third visit to our office. RIKEN S’pore RO Director Tsuzawa talked about RIKEN and Singapore’s scientific R&D activities and policies as well as his overseas experience.

RIKEN scientist awarded The Asia HPC Leadership Award at SupercomputingAsia 2019 (SCA19) in Singapore

March 12-14 2019

The theme for SCA19 is “HPC Futures – Hyperscalers, Exa, AI, Quantum and Beyond”. RIKEN has been attended this annual conference since its launch last year. RIKEN Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) Director Prof. Satoshi Matsuoka was awarded The Asia HPC Leadership Award on 12 March. The award recognises an outstanding individual with excellence in leadership within the HPC community.

Attending USM-RIKEN International Center for Ageing Science (URICAS) Symposium 2019 and International Conference on Ageing 2019, Penang, Malaysia

March 6-8, 2019

URICAS Symposium 2019 was held at Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM), Penang, Malaysia on 6 March 2019. USM-RIKEN Centre of Ageing Science (URICAS) was established at USM in February 2015 as a joint laboratory of USM and RIKEN.Since then URICAS has held annual symposium and strengthen the research collaborations and nurture young researchers between the two research institutions.  Researchers from RIKEN and USM including students from USM presented their research works and projects.

Following the symposium, International Conference on Ageing 2019 ageing with dignity was organized by USM on 7-8 March 2019. 21 RIKEN researchers and officials attended the international conference.

Students from Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Josai Senior High School visited RIKEN Office

A group of students and a teacher from Hyogo Prefectural Akashi Josai Senior High School in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan visited RIKEN Office for their Overseas Program. RIKEN S’pore RO Director Tsuzawa talked about his overseas experience and lectured about RIKEN and Singapore’s scientific R&D activities.

PRESTO(Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology) program researchers funded by Japan Science and Technology Agency(JST)visited RIKEN Office before their workshop with NRF. Among members were Dr.Hiromi Arai, Privacy and Social System Team, RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project and  RIKEN S’pore RO Director Tsuzawa talked about Singapore’s scientific R&D landscape and exchanged ideas on the international collaboration.
